The Text to Image feature in Adobe InDesign is a great way of generating generic images on the fly. But what it has trouble doing is generating images with transparent backgrounds. You can generate images with black backgrounds or white backgrounds but not fully transparent.
In this tutorial, learn how to generate an image of planet Jupiter on a white background and use the Clipping Path Options to remove the background. Please note that this method works best with images that have white backgrounds.
Download the exercise files below to follow along step-by-step in this tutorial.
First, let's generate the image we'll be using in the layout for this planet Jupiter presentation slide.
Open the Text to Image feature by going to Window > Text to Image.
With the Ellipse Frame Tool, draw a circle shape. Hold Shift while drawing the shape to maintain the proportions of the circle shape.
Type a the text prompt, Planet Jupiter, white background.
Choose one of the three generated options.
Here is how the image will look like after being generated. You'll notice it has the white background applied.

Keep in mind, if you're not happy with three options available, you can always generate another three until you have a variation you're please with.
Now, here comes the fun part – removing the background!
Removing White Background
Click the Content Grabber to select the planet image.
Go up to Object > Clipping Path > Options.
In the Clipping Path dialog box, choose Detect Edges in the Type menu. By default, the lightest tones are excluded – in this case, the white background.
Specify your clipping path options and click OK.
You will notice that the background has been removed. Here is a visual look at how the image will appear after applying the steps as explained above.
Since this is a planet, let's add another layer of depth by applying two effects to the image of Jupiter. This will separate the image from the starry night background.
Click the image frame once and open the Effect panel. You can also access the Effects option from the Properties panel.
With the Effect panel open, click the Fx icon and choose Outer Glow.
In the Effect dialog, set the Size of the Outer Glow to 28 px.
Apply a secondary effect of Inner Glow.
Set the Size of Inner Glow to 22 px.
Click OK to finalize both of the Effects.
Here's a visual look at how the Effects will appear after applying both presets to the planet image.
